Before filing a protective order, it is important to understand which type will apply best to your situation. The types of protective orders available are detailed below. For further reading, each includes a link to the most current version of the pertaining Washington state law and amendments.
Domestic Violence Protection Order (DVPO). This order may be filed by an individual who is seeking a protection order against a family member, household member, or dating partner. This order can be filed by anyone who has experienced physical harm, assault, stalking, or who fears imminent harm in the same manner. Chapter 26.50 RCW: Domestic Violence Protection
Restraining Order. A restraining order must be filed as a part of a family law case (divorce or dissolution of marriage, legal separation, or parenting plan). Sexual Assault Protection Order (SAPO). This order may be filed by someone who is experiencing unwanted, non-consensual sexual conduct by someone who is not a member of the household. Chapter 7.90 RCW: Sexual Assault Protection Order Act
Stalking Protection Order. This order can be filed by someone who is experiencing stalking and/or harassment from an individual who is not a member of the household. Chapter 7.92 RCW: Jennifer Paulson Stalking Protection Order Act
Vulnerable Adult Protection Order (VAPO). This order is filed against an individual who is seeking to exploit or abuse (or who threatens the same) a vulnerable adult, who is unable to care for themselves. Chapter 74.34 RCW: Abuse of Vulnerable Adults
Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO). This order may be filed by a family member, household member, or a member of law enforcement who believes that the individual in question poses a significant danger to themselves or others by having access to a firearm.
